Prominent Chinese Musician-Turned-Politician Indicted for Graft

More than 10 months after his downfall, Liu Kuanren, a former senior official in a state-sanctioned democratic party and a former top political advisor in northwestern China’s Shaanxi province, has been indicted.
On Wednesday, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate announced that the National Commission of Supervision had concluded its investigation into Liu’s suspected bribery and embezzlement, transferring the case for prosecution. The top prosecuting agency ordered Liu’s arrest and assigned the Urumqi Municipal People’s Procuratorate in the Xinjiang region to handle the case. Public charges were recently filed at the Urumqi Intermediate People’s Court.

1. More than 10 months after his downfall, former senior official Liu Kuanren, from a state-sanctioned democratic party and top political advisor in Shaanxi province, has been indicted [para. 1].

10. Liu gained fame with xun, pioneering techniques from erhu and guqin, called “first person of Huaxia playing the xun”; authored papers, collaborated with orchestras, founded first professional xun ensemble at Central Conservatory, holds patents for improved xun and ocarina [para. 10].
11. A 2022 Shaanxi Musicians Association journal article credits Liu’s xun solo “Reverie” for inspiring Jia Pingwa’s novel Ruined City; they became friends and recorded an album [para. 11].
