Sichuan cuts power to factories and households amid heat wave
Facing an extreme heat wave, Southwest China’s Sichuan province has begun cutting power to households, despite local officials’ efforts to ensure supply by ordering energy-intensive factories to suspend their operations. Temperatures have hit record-highs in the region this month, creating a glut of electricity demand for air-conditioning. The heat has also dried up water flows into hydropower reservoirs to just 50% of average historical levels. Sichuan derives around three-quarters of its electricity from hydropower, making the province particularly vulnerable to drought.
